Well Alright! That's exactly what I said just after I pushed play on the new CD from Evergreen File. This band from Jersey rocks and knows how to lay down a neat Texas groove. The track in question, "Cold Winter Sky," definitely has radio play written all over it. In fact I'd say that most of the six tunes on this EP are radio friendly. Songsmith John Tornquist has the hooks and barbs of a true Nashville writer, and the rhythm section of Michael Zevitt (bass) and Bill Lovgren (percussion) pump and jump along with Tornquist's twang guitar. Sue McNiece (backing vocals) adds some very nice color to the edge of Tornquist's voice. I'd love to hear more from her, perhaps a duet a la Emmy Lou and Mark Knopfler.
The album flows like a good concert set. After the first track smacks you down in your seat, Evergreen File let's you relax with a Van Morrison stylization called "Fast Track Love." "Sunflower Wars," a nice pick me up leads into a welcome minor blues shuffle called "Your Door." The last track is a very inventive instrumental, something you don't hear bands do a lot these days, entitled "Autumn Song." The only disappointment on this wonderful EP is track 5, "Sorry." It almost sounded like a different band was playing that track.
I am definitely looking forward to hearing more from Evergreen File. Perhaps a full-length CD is in the works. I'm heading off to their website to check out where they'll be playing because it sounds like they put on a great show. |

Many of the songs have a jazzy feel with a strong bass beat and emotional lyrics.
